Around two dozen business owners along Main Street in Daytona Beach and the surrounding areas have applied for permits to allow outdoor events during Bike Week. The event typically draws around 500,000 visitors.“I need Bike Week. I need bike week really bad,” Carol Boprie-Daniel said.Boprie-Daniel envisions Bike Week before the pandemic, when motorcycle enthusiasts were shoulder-to-shoulder, eating, drinking, listening to music. The visitors were buying Bike Week merchandise. For many business owners, it's the most profitable time of the year.“You would have to scrape for the rest of the year and never make up for what Bike Week brings to us,” Boprie-Daniel said. City officials pulled permits for the last day and a half of Bike Week 2020 as COVID-19 loomed large around the county and permits weren’t issued for Biketoberfest in the fall. This year, business owners plan to rent tents for outdoor vending and book entertainment.“The virus is really raging so I have deep concerns,” Mayor Derrick Henry said.Henry says the COVID-19 climate hasn't improved. He says instead cases are surging again and he worries permitting outdoor events will send the wrong message. “If you want to have outside vending maybe they agree to have, maybe to close the inside or do half the inside or a quarter,” Henry said.Leaders will consider a Bike Week master plan that will likely include some health and safety precautions this week. The mayor expects he and his colleagues will make a final decision on outdoor events Wednesday night.
