ANGOLA, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections (DOC) says a new body scanner at Louisiana State Penitentiary is paying dividends after two visitors to the prison were arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the jail for inmates.

On Sunday, August 19, deputies with West Feliciana Parish say they booked two visitors on various drug charges. They say the newly installed body scanner detected an odd object on one of the visitors. The visitor, identified as Kendralyn Perkins, 21, of New Orleans, then submitted to a more thorough search, at which time, officers reportedly found marijuana, heroin, crack cocaine, and Suboxone. Perkins is facing the following charges:

  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule I narcotics (marijuana)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule I narcotics (heroin)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule II narcotics (crack cocaine)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule III narcotics (Suboxone)

The other visitors, identified as Perrika Corner, 24, also of New Orleans, reportedly saw the body scanner and then left the building. Officers searched Corner's vehicle and report finding marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, oxycodone, Suboxone, and Xanax. Corner is charged as follows:

  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule I narcotics (marijuana)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule I narcotics (heroin)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule II narcotics (methamphetamine)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule II narcotics (oxycodone)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule III narcotics (Suboxone)
  • Possession with the intent to distribute schedule IV narcotics (Xanax)

Officials say all but two of Louisiana's state prisons have body scanners, which are helping to prevent visitors from smuggling in contraband. DOC warns all visitors they are subject to search when entering any state prison and will be arrested if caught trying to bring in contraband.
