US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday (24 November) that Time magazine was contemplating naming him "Person of the Year" again and Twitter fiercely roasted him for it. Trump said he was contacted by Time and told that he would "probably" be selected as the magazine's "Person of the Year" for the second year in a row.

However, he said he decided to turn down the honour because he would have to do an interview and photo shoot.

"Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named 'Man (Person) of the Year,' like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot," Trump tweeted on Friday evening. "I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!"

Trump was named Time's "Person of the Year" in December 2016 after his shocking victory over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the presidential election.

Later on Friday evening, Time disputed the president's claim saying he is "incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year."

"Time does not comment on our choice until publication which is December 6," the magazine tweeted. Time's chief content officer Alan Murray also hit back at Trump's claim and called it "Total BS."

"Amazing. Not a speck of truth here—Trump tweets he 'took a pass' at being named TIME's person of the year," Murray tweeted.

Meanwhile, Twitter hilariously mocked Trump over the "ridiculous" and "mind-numbingly pathetic" claim with a slew of jokes, comments and memes.

British number one Andy Murray tweeted: "Bbc just called to say I was PROBABLY going to be named sports personality of the year but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!

"The pages in Time magazine are not big enough to hold your EGO anyway! Many more deserving of the honor as well," one Twitter user wrote. Another person speculated: "Is it possible he was offered a yearly subscription to Time and got confused?"

Director Amin Matalqa called him the "most insecure person of the year."

"It's simple: If Time magazine wants to mess with Trump, it should name Robert Mueller the 'Person of the Year'," one person wrote.

Others mocked Trump in light of the fake March 2009 Time magazine covers that were found prominently displayed in his golf clubs earlier this year.

"If this was a reality TVshow or comedic movie it'd be hilarious. Sadly, though, this man 'runs' our country. Still not sure how that happened. Ugh!" one user chimed.
